With the announcement of the brand as a finalist of this year’s Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize—Scandinavia’s most prestigious independent accolade—the designers speak to Office Authenticity, new-found inspirations and their own unique approach are all discussed.
In recent seasons, the Danish minimalist template is becoming more common in fashion. Saks Potts first began by making eye-popping coats in body-hugging forms, but there’s a breezier touch that inhabits the brand now. How has this creative shift affected you?
Saks Potts’ creative evolution has been closely linked to our own personal growth and experience. We founded the brand in 2014. Fresh out of high-school, we were inspired to create colorful fur coats that would stand out and brighten the dark monochrome colors prevalent in Scandinavian fashion. Our focus has changed as we have matured and seen the world change. Now, we design pieces to be treasured and cherished in the summer suitcase or perfect wardrobe. The Harris tweed, denim, shirts and silk dresses that we design are made to last for a lifetime. This evolution is a reflection of our desire to stay true to our core aesthetics and values while adapting to changing times.
It’s an understandable shift, as you both met really young in your native Copenhagen, Kindergarten, and you founded your eponymous brand at just 19 and 20 years old. Was the transition an easy one?
We were driven by passion and instincts to create Saks Potts. We felt and knew that this was the right direction for us.
Has your creativity and inspiration changed since the launch of your first product?
Our brand is a reflection on what we are inspired by in our lives, mainly international cultural trends and our Copenhagen upbringing. Barbara’s knowledge of art history also helped to shape our collection. We began by drawing inspiration from strong themes. This resulted in collections that were eye-catching, such as the Biker collection. We’ve evolved and have shifted our focus to timeless concepts that are deeply rooted within our own personal experiences. This shift has enabled us to create designs that are more versatile and authentic, while still reflecting our personal values.
You’ve partnered with other brands over the last seasons, and your wardrobe has gone from strength to strength by introducing a wealth of timeless propositions, including a strong take on menswear. Do you think collaboration can be powerful?
Saks Potts is devoted to collaboration. It is not just a business decision; it’s a personal, meaningful experience. We are committed to collaborating with members of our community that inspire us, and who share the same values and aesthetics. These partnerships enhance the authenticity and storytelling of our brand. We collaborate to create something beautiful and unique that is beyond what we would have been able to achieve individually.
What do you think Saks potts represents now? How would you position the brand in relation to the Danish creative landscape?
Saks potts currently stands for authenticity and community. It also represents empowerment of women. These values are the foundation of our decisions every day and guide everything we do. We strive as a brand to be recognized not only in Denmark, but also internationally, as a luxury brand. Our commitment to authentic values, and the quality of our products, sets us apart from other brands and allows us connect with an international audience. We are proud to be a part the Danish creative canvas and add our unique perspective, creative expression, and rich tapestry in Danish fashion.
